Description of service(s) | Established over 75 years ago, the St. Thomas University Students’ Union is a democratic body representing all students at St. Thomas University. The mission of the Students’ Union is to effectively represent and provide services to the students of St. Thomas University and to advocate the position of the organization before the University’s administration, municipal government, provincial ministries, and federal departments. The Students’ Union strives to enhance the life and experience of students with a positive educational, social and cultural environment while attending St. Thomas University. Help Desk: The STUSU’s Help Desk is there for STU students! Located in James Dunn Hall, it offers students a wide array of services and resources, including the following: -a free phone for local calls -free local fax service -photocopying ($0.10 per copy) -Food Bank drop-off box -bus schedules -a first aid kit -poster approving and stamping - supplies you can borrow (i.e. pens, stapler, tape, etc.) -phone numbers and directories -applications and various SU forms -tons of general STU info and much more The Help Desk is run with the help of volunteers, and if you are interested in helping out, please contact the Help Desk Coordinator, at su_helpdesk@stu.ca Bus Pass In 2006 a referendum was passed at St. Thomas University to create a campus-wide bus pass for use on Fredericton Transit. Because of this, every student at St. Thomas University is eligible to use Fredericton transit all year while their student ID is valid. The bus is useful to students who live in Rigby Hall, and to those who live off campus outside of walking distance. The Bus Pass is negotiated through the STUSU Vice President of Student Life. If you have any issues with the bus pass or have any suggestions for an improvement, contact su_vpsl@stu.ca. Safe Ride Operated in partnership with the University of New Brunswick Students’ Union, Saferide provides a free drive home for students on campus. Whether you are studying late or coming back from a night class, you can take SafeRide home with your student ID card. SafeRide operates three vans with UNBSU and STUSU decals, however poor weather may sometimes force the vans to cancel for the night. Pickup locations are outside of James Dunn Hall, the Students’ Union Building, and Head Hall on UNB campus. Hours are as follows: Monday through Friday 5:30pm-11:30pm Sunday 2pm-11pm Community Food Smart For $15 a month, students can purchase a bag of produce from local distributors, which includes 25-30 lbs of food in a reusable bag. We are also covering the membership fee of all STUdents who want to use this program, and students are able to attend cooking classes twice a month at 686 Riverside Dr. for a discounted rate. Staple foods such as apples, carrots, bananas, oranges, onions, and potatoes will be included each month; the rest of the items will vary depending on what is in season. Each produce bag also contains information on how to prepare and store your food, and new recipes based about their specialty food item of the month. To order a bag, you must pay $15 before the first Thursday of every month to the Help Desk and pick up is the first Thursday of every month in the afternoon at the Help Desk. Emergency Bursaries The Emergency Bursaries program is provided by the Students’ Union to help out our students when they find themselves in an unfortunate unforeseen circumstance. The program operated for years as part of the Students’ Union budget, but in spring of 2013 was entrenched as a separate, self-sustaining program through referendum. Students pay $13 per year each in order to maintain the program and to employ a St. Thomas University Student as the Emergency Bursaries Coordinator. Contact: su_ebursary@stu.ca Clubs and Societies Clubs and Organizations are groups of students who are interested in talking about or taking action on a particular issue. They are groups that are formed outside of classes and open to all members of the STU community, with some clubs welcoming students from UNB and the greater Fredericton area. Charitable Assistance The Charitable Assistance Budget is dedicated to helping students who wish to engage in charitable endeavours. If there is an initiative that you believe the Union should donate to, contact the Vice-President Administration at su_vpadmin@stu.ca Academic Assistance The Academic Assistance budget is dedicated to supporting students who wish to further their education or knowledge in a certain subject but cannot make ends meet. For example, needing to attend a conference in Moncton or Halifax. Academic Assistance is administered by the Vice-President Administration. Health and Dental Coverage The STUSU is part of the Campus Trust, which uses a self-funded model to provide students with health and dental coverage. Campus Trust is made up of various member institutions each with their own specialized plans tailored to their institution’s needs. STUSU's coverage with the Campus Trust is meant to enhance the student quality of life at an affordable cost. Welcome Week Welcome Week is the first week where first year students are welcomed into the community at St. Thomas University. Organized by the Students’ Union through our Welcome Week Chair, works in partnership with Residence Life and the University Administration to plan this a week of exciting events. Welcome Week is a week full of activities that are both fun and informative. Sometimes they’re more fun than informative, but that’s alright too. Shinerama is also a part of the Welcome Week. It is Canada’s largest postsecondary fundraiser. Shinerama is part of Cystic Fibrosis Canada, which is an organization that has been raising funds for the fight against cystic fibrosis since 1960 and has contributed $150 million to leading research and care. As a result, Canada has one of the world’s highest survival rates for people with Cystic Fibrosis. |
