Description & Services | |

Description of service(s) | The Children's Program uses the High/Scope curriculum to foster age appropriate self-help, motor, cognitive and communication skills; to expose the child to the outside world; to stimulate thinking and problem solving skills; to develop the child's self-esteem, sense of security, personal control, personal worth and feeling of being loved, of belonging and of being capable. It is mandatory that the parents of the children attending the Children's Program participate in both the child development program and their own Parents' Program. The Parents' Program staff work with over 30 at-risk families in many ways: In-Home Visits: Interventionists regularly visit families' homes to work one-on-one with them on a variety of topics including: parenting, discipline, relationships, crisis management, home safety, community referrals, etc. Bi-Weekly Parenting Groups: Headstart's parents participate in an educational parenting group. Topics discussed in the past were parent/child attachment, safety and security, communicating love to their children, nutrition, stress management, and discipline. Days In: Headstart's parents come twice a month to spend the day in the classroom with their children. Parents' Retreat: Parents participate in a two-and-a-half day retreat to identify needs and develop a stronger commitment to improve their family situation. To answer the need to continue to support our children and parents post-Headstart, the School Success program was implemented in the fall of 2004. it is an after-care service for our children, who are entering Kindergarten, and their parents. It's goal is to promote academic success for our children and to maximize the gains made at Headstart. It also provides support for our parents and children at a time when they may feel very isolated and intimidated fitting in with the school system. The School Success Program consists of: In-Home Visits - done on a bi-weekly basis. Referrals and Resources - accessing appropriate agencies Parent - School Relationships - liaison and support between parent-teacher Center-Based activities - Seminars, Family fun days, and Summer program. |
