Description of service(s) | Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saint John commits to providing opportunities for children to develop their sense of belonging, self worth and potential through the friendship and guidance of quality mentoring programs with caring volunteers. Young people served are between the ages of 6-16. Big Brothers/Sisters/Couples are individuals over 18 years of age who spend 3 hours a week mentoring a child in community based activities. In-School Mentors spend 1 hour a week mentoring children in nearby schools. In-School Teen Mentors are grade 11-12 students who spend 1 hour a week mentoring children in partner schools. Kids 'N' Kops is a summer Daycamp mini-police academy for waiting list children that operates in partnership with the Saint John Police Force. Fun While You Wait is small group mentoring program that offers support to the 100 children waiting to be matched in other programs. Go Girls and Game On are small group mentoring programs that focus on healthy bodies, minds and life choices for middle school children. |

Application | Children are referred to the community-based programs through parent(s), schools, social workers, neighbours, counsellors and other relatives. Applications are available for "Littles" which must be completed by a parent/guardian. Teacher/school referrals are required for the In School Mentoring programs along with parental application. |

Designated Day/Week/Month/ Events | September is Big Brothers/Big Sisters Recruitment Month. Bowl for Kids Sake takes place every April.This is the charity's signature fund raising event that raises up to 1/3 of the annual operating budget. Annual BIG Used Books Sale in Brunswick Square Centre Court during the last week in August. Donations of "gently used" hardcover, soft cover, and children's books can be dropped off at our office or any local Sobey's store starting June 1st. Holiday Gift Wrapping campaign each year from Dec. 11th to 24th for donation. |
